Help PlayAction to build a playground in Uganda

The project

The GlobeDreamers' team of 10 volunteers will construct a playground at Spire Road Primary School which is situated in the heart of in Jinja, Uganda. The school is a Government operated primary school which also has a nursery section and a special needs department which supports blind students.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY

Play provides a wide range of vital benefits to children’s development, learning and well-being:

The deputy head teacher of Spire Road Primary School said,

“The playground helps to keep the children entertained and motivated. COVID school closures for nearly 2 years have severely affected children’s school performance in national exams. Many children are not returning to school. We believe that the playground will be a wonderful way to rebuild our school’s enrolment while also supporting the children’s academic performance.”

He also requested that we put the playground at the nursery section, because right now their enrolment at nursery is so low and the playground is the most effective way to boost the enrolment in the nursery school.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

The project schedule provides our team with the opportunity to transform a desolate school field into a fun and inspiring educational playground as well as ample leisure time to explore what Jinja, as the adventure capital of East Africa has to offer... From relaxing by the pool, visiting the busy central market, white water rafting down the Nile or quad biking along the banks of the river – Jinja is an explorer’s paradise.

The 14-day project itinerary is as follows:

• Day 1: Arrival (Transfer from Entebbe Airport to Jinja; Welcome Meeting)
• Day 2: Playground Construction (H&S briefing; playground planning; start of construction)
• Day 3: Playground Construction
• Day 4: Playground Construction (Morning) + Leisure (Afternoon)
• Day 5: Playground Construction
• Day 6: Playground Construction
• Day 7: Leisure
• Day 8: Leisure
• Day 9: Playground Construction
• Day 10: Playground Construction
• Day 11: Playground Construction (Morning) + Leisure (Afternoon)
• Day 12: Playground Construction
• Day 13: Playground Opening Celebration
• Day 14: Depart (Transfer from Jinja to Entebbe Airport)

ACCOMODATION AND FOOD

The team will stay at Explorers River Camp, situated 8km from Jinja town. Overlooking Lake Bujagali, Explorers River Camp is often referred to as one of Uganda's, and even Africa’s most memorable places to stay. Fantastic views of the Nile, a well-stocked bar and excellent meals have made this site one of East Africa’s most popular places to stay. The bar deck overlooking the river is the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer and amazing sunsets. The trees above boast a multitude of tropical bird life and monkeys, and the ‘riverside showers’ alone have become famous for the incredible scenery they overlook.

The team will stay in dormitory accommodation. Breakfast and dinner will be offered at Explorer River Camp on each day. Lunch will be provided at the school on playground construction days and at Explorer River Camp on leisure days.
