A Representation of the United Nations Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) was opened in France in October 1952, almost two years after the creation of the organization in 1950. It was entrusted by the French authorities with a role important in the asylum procedure. As of December 31, 2019, there were 308,583 refugees in France, according to the 2019 activity report of the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (OFPRA). In 2019, the number of asylum applications in France reached 132,826, an increase of 7.4% compared to 2018. These figures do not include people placed under the Dublin procedure.
